In New Down, we encounter a sea of calabashes. Their endlessness speaks to the array of the gourds’ possibilities and uses when dried and hardened as containers, instruments, and ornaments. By painting them in light purples and blues in a manner that blends them together, T. Williams softens both the objects and our reflections on them. Williams’ small paintings offer intimate reflections on everyday Liberian life portrayed through a style that depicts people and their surroundings as abstracted impressions to capture their combined ambiance.
