It is said that a lot can be learned about a person by their hands. for Doris is an ode to hands that hold, carry, rub, and blister to provide, maintain, soothe, and love. The size of the painting offers an intimate appreciation of a small but mighty feature of our bodies that is often taken for granted. Doris’ hands blend with the elements of the earth, creating harmony between what nature yields and humans’ use of it. The texture of the work is attributed to Stephanie Lindquist’s use of soil—in this work, from Sierra Leone—in her practice for its capacity to trace origins and lineages that highlight how the earth grounds, bears, and nourishes us.
